Supervision is an integral part of any clinical practice, including counselling and psychotherapy. Hess (1980) defines supervision as:
‘A quintessential interpersonal interaction with the general goal that one person, the supervisor, meets with another, the supervisee, in an effort to make the latter more effective in helping people’.
Clinical supervision is used in a variety of contexts and can be on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting; this can be delivered face-to-face or online. It is a means of monitoring the quality of professional application, developing skills, discussing casework, identifying dynamics and other professional issues as well as serving as a gatekeeper for those entering a profession.
AFFECT currently provides supervision and consultancy across voluntary, private and statutory sector organisations such as the NHS and HM Prisons, in addition to individual private therapists.
